martes

Dad is so kind, waiting every morning for me to wake up so we can eat breakfast together. We have another wonderful breakfast of Honey Bunches of Oats con Almendras y leche. We are running low on breakfast supplies so we will probably have to stop at the supermercado after dinner. We get ready to go downstairs to the cafe to order coffee and hot chocolate. So far the wind does not look promising.

We decide to go paddle boarding in hopes that when we are out on the water, the wind will decide to come out. Dad and I are on a mission to go paddle boarding with whales! As we were getting ready, I saw spray from a blowhole. We race out to see in order to be there in case of any whale sighting. Searching and paddling with intent to see a huge whale, yet we see nothing but water. We head over where the motorhomes and tents are located on the beach to get some pictures.

We arrive back at the beach and decide to go on a snorkeling adventure. According to Ian, there is a nice spot not too far away from us. Before we leave town, we stop at El Viejo for some lunch. Dad ordered pescado chip (fish and chips) and I ordered shrimp tacos. The food was delicious and enough to fuel us for our journey.

The road to the snorkeling site was terrible! It was not a paved road, there were lots of rocks, and hills to drive up and down. Our Jetta was not made to go through this tough terrain but somehow it managed! We arrived on the beach probably an hour later to a beautiful spot. There were large rocks to swim around and lots of fish. The water was very refreshing on this hot sunny day. We took pictures and some video of all the fish. There were so many! Schools and schools of fish and many that looked like they were off the set of Finding Nemo.

After our swim, we dried off on the beach. We drove over to a nearby hotel to drink beer and Shirley Temples. Mine was so good that I had two! We began our journey back to the casita and saw lots of cows on the dirt road. Dad said I could chase after them but I thought they looked too big to run. I was wrong. The cattle started running once I got too close to them and I chased them onto the beach.

It took us about 50 minutes to get back to the casita and once we were back we decided to relax a little before dinner. We ate a plum, FaceTimed Mom, and then went to dinner at Campestre Triny. We had an appetizer of chips and salsa (the salsa was tasty), Pacifico Beer and Mango Margarita, a Mexican Platter (I forgot the official name but there was rice, quesadillas, guacamole, a pepper covered in something, and steak) that Dad ate and I got the Shrimp Burger which was scrumptious! There was live music playing the whole time we were eating and it was nice. This was also the first restaurant that we ate inside (the doors were still open so it didn't feel like we were completely inside). We headed back to the room, where I showered and then we watched two episodes of How I Met Your Mother.

Hopefully the wind will be back tomorrow!!

lunes

Today was a very peaceful morning. I woke up to the sound of waves crashing on the beach. I read for a little while until Dad saw that I was awake. We got up to eat a breakfast of Honey Bunches of Oats con Almendras y leche and we also ate a plum. We decided to go check out the cafe to see if they had hot chocolate. Luckily they did and it was quite tasty! The forecast was looking good for wind so we went back up to the room to prepare for the day.

Dad was headed out to kiteboard while I was having a lesson. My instructor, Ben, has been kiting for about 8 years and he enjoys teaching as much as kiting. Since I have been kiting before, we reviewed the basics and then worked on things that had troubled me in the past. We set up the kite, went down the beach a ways, and practiced flying it. Then I practiced body dragging in the water. The students are given a helmet with a walkie talkie attached to it so that we can hear what our instructor is saying, but they can't hear what the student is saying… Which is good and bad. Good so your instructor doesn't hear the weird sounds you make and strange things you say. Bad because you can't communicate back to him. The wind began to die so we paused our lesson and I went to go find the key to the casita. Earlier the key was not in our pile of stuff so I did a quick check and did not find it so I went to find Dad. He was wayyyyy down the beach.

When I finally reached him, he was trying to go out but there wasn't enough wind to keep the kite in the air. The key was in the pile of stuff this time! We packed up his stuff and headed back. We ate lunch at the cafe and Dad order fish tacos, which he said were amazing and I ordered a chicken pesto burger which was yummy. After lunch, we decided to rest and digest in the casita and then maybe go back out to kite some more. I was really tired and ended up not going back out and Dad stayed in as well. Since we ate lunch kind of late, we ended up eating dinner kind of late as well. We FaceTimed with Mom before dinner. Afterwards, we went to the bank, then the supermercado to get more fruit, and then to Herman's for dinner. Dad got the Fish Special and I ordered the Shrimp Special. Both of us enjoyed our meals and then went back to the casita to watch Suburgatory and go to bed. Rest was necessary from a hard day of play!

domingo

Because of the three hour time difference, I was able to sleep in and wake up at a reasonable time. After waking up, Dad and I went to eat the breakfast buffet served in the hotel. While the hotel was the same company as the one in the States, there were a few differences. Instead of serving sausage as meat, there were beans and chopped up hot dogs. The scrambled eggs were not as yellow and had pepper mixed in but they were still tasty. There were assorted breads available to toast and many pastries, mostly unknown to me. Instead of milk in individual cartons, it was in a large dispenser, and there was also juice next to it as well. The yogurt was in a bowl rather than in separate containers.

After breakfast we packed up our bags, checked out of the hotel, and loaded everything up into the car. We then walked to the Marina Fiesta and was stopped almost immediately by a guy who wanted us to go on a whale watching experience. It sounded really cool so hopefully we will do it later in the week. We walked towards the beach and saw a sea lion! Dad was able to get a picture of it. We went down to feel the water and it was much cooler than I was hoping it to be. The water would feel nice if it was a really hot day so you could go in and cool off.

As we headed back to the hotel, we saw the sea lion again and he was right behind a boat. Dad was concerned with how close it was to the boat and I was wondering if the men on the boat would ever feed it any fish. A man came up to us and started telling us about the sea lion. His name is Pancho and he is the fattest sea lion in the area. He was once the only one who would follow the boats in after they came back from fishing and now some more of the sea lions have learned to do the same. Here is a video which made the sea lions famous in Cabo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGz-NIBZwEw

The man was very nice and told us about different groups that went out whale watching and which was the best to go with. He went on one two years ago and took hundreds of pictures of whales. We were talking for awhile about where we were from and about his mother and what he did. As we were leaving, he yelled, "Go Tar heels!" So I guess you will never know where you might meet a Tar heel fan!

We got back to the hotel, went to the bathroom, and hopped into the car to drive to Los Bariles. It took us about 50 minutes to get there. The roads were curvy and we saw dogs and one cattle! It kind of reminded me of the ride we take from Calgary to British Columbia. You would think that the land would be flat because it is so close to the water but there are hills and mountains all around.

When we arrived we were starving. We put our luggage into the casita, asked where there was a good place to eat, and took off to find it. We were searching for this one place and kept driving around the small town but could not find it. So we ended up going to a place next to the supermercado to eat. It was located outside and there were a few people eating there. The people working there did not speak English and Dad tried to ask for flat bottled water but failed because they brought us bubbly water. The man working went next door to the supermercado to buy the bubbly mineral water just for us. After we ordered, it seemed like ages before they fed us. Fortunately, there was a mini appetizer of chips and spicy salsa. Since we were sitting outside, there were tons of flies. When the food finally arrived, so did 50 more fly friends. It was a struggle to eat and swat away the flies but the food was pretty delicious. I ordered coconut shrimp and Dad ordered fish. He did not know what type of fish it was but thinks it might have been flounder. I was so hungry that I forgot to take a picture! I did take picture of the food after we were finished devouring it.  We went to the supermercado to pick up cereal, milk, fruit, water, beer, juice, Mac and Cheese, and butter.

Back at the casita, Dad read while I took a nap. After I woke up, we FaceTimed with my mom and then Skyped my Grandma. I made dinner of Mac and Cheese in a pan (which is quite difficult because not all of the water can stay in the pan after the noodles are added and when stirring all the ingredients together, the noodles like to escape the pan and hang out on the countertop). I hadn't made Mac and Cheese for awhile but it tasted pretty yummy and we had a plum for dessert.

We cleaned up and got ready for bed and then watched the movie Now You See Me. Dad was falling asleep towards then end of the movie. Once the movie was over, we went to bed, eager for a good night sleep and to wake up and go kiteboarding tomorrow!

sábado

Today was just a regular day of travel. Luckily for me it started later than I thought (I didn't have to wake up early!). Dad and I ate breakfast in the hotel buffet, which was pretty basic: scrambled eggs, honey dew melon, milk…

After packing up all of our gear, we headed out to the lobby and found that we were the only ones using the shuttle to the airport. Check in was normal and we got to our gate in plenty of time. Our first flight did not take too long and I slept all the way to Charlotte. It was one of the last flights for our pilot because his last flight is on Tuesday.

In Charlotte, we ate lunch at California Pizza Kitchen; Dad ordered the Chicken Pesto and I ate the Tuna Melt. It was actually pretty tasty. As we were boarding the plane, I was disappointed that I had the middle seat rather than my favorite: the window seat. Dad had the aisle seat, which is his favorite. Apparently he does not pick out how which seats he wants on the plane and I think that is weird. I waited unbuckled for the person with the window seat to arrive and as I scanned the line of people waiting to get to their seats, I see this guy, who is young, younger than me but I wasn't sure by how much. I began to think about how cool it would be if he sat next to me and we became friends. But then my next thought was that I was definitely not dressed to meet people in the airport (I was wearing a tye dyed tank with my large swim sweat pants). Of course he then says that he is seated by the window so we get out and quickly get back in our row to let everyone else continue boarding the plane. A lady compliments us on how efficient we were able to get in and out of the row.

The plane takes off soon afterwards. I slept a little until drinks are served and I ask for a Ginger Ale. Dad and I watch the movie About Time and it was pretty good. We have about 45 minutes until we land in Phoenix and I ask the guy next to me if he needs to use the bathroom. We talk and find out that we go to the same school!

When the plane lands, we look for our gate and find out that it is close by, so we look for dinner. Dad and I both get Turkey Salads and they weren't that bad. I call my grandma, making her guess which state I am in. We couldn't talk for too long because our flight was beginning to board. This time on the plane, Dad and I are separated but I sat in between a girl probably around my age and an older woman. The woman and her husband were going to Cabo to visit some family. There were also a lot of other college students on the plane, notably one loud junior male. He was pumped to go to Cabo and so was everyone else once the plane landed.

It was around 8 o'clock and following luggage pick up and customs, we go outside to look for our rental car company. Dad is searching and searching but with no luck. The car company is not here… He begins talking with a man who works for a different car company and he tries calling the numbers that Dad was given. All phone call attempts go to an answering machine. Finally we decide to go with this other car company to get a car so we can go to the hotel and sleep.

Arriving at the rental car building, I wait outside with the ants while Dad is inside getting a car. I notice that the ants are carrying a large bug away and they are moving quite quickly. Squatting and staring at the ants, a man comes up next to me and startles me. He works for the car company and asks me questions about where I am from, where we are staying, etc. He asks me if I want some water and I say yes. Then he says he will look for some maps for us to use while we are on vacation. Soon the rental car pulls up and once the inspection of the car is complete, we get on the road and head 30 miles away to our hotel!

We reached the hotel, checked in, and headed to our room only to find that our key did not work. So Dad went back downstairs to get the problem fixed and came back up to open the door. When he opened the door, the luggage stand was blocking the door but he was able to push through it. The room didn't look clean and when Dad entered farther into the room, he discovered that there were people sleeping in the beds!  When we went back downstairs to the front desk, all of us were laughing and one guy working said, "Welcome to Cabo!"

Welcome to Cabo indeed!
